  WHAT IS CRITICAL MEDIA LITERACY In this e-book, we have chosen to add the term "Critical" to the term "media literacy". Critical media literacy encourages the analysis of dominant ideology and an inquiry into the means of production. it is grounded in social justice (kellner and share, 2007) and explores the intricacies of ownership, production, and distribution. critical media literacy is an inquiry into power, specifically the power of the media industries and how they shape the stories and messages we receive.

  Better connected neighborhoods take action against crime  Criminal groups operate more easily in hard to reach areas. Well designed streets and infrastructure facilitate surveillance and rapid police action.  Public transport can reduce inequality Areas without public transportation tend to become isolated and can produce a spiral of negative effects such as unemployment, inequality, and crime. More and better public transportation makes it easier for people to access more and better opportunities.  A Compact city has more surveillance Combining residential, work, and commercial spaces within a neighborhood generates grater activity during the day and night, allowing those who frequent it to exercise passive observation of what is happening around them.
